What is Chinese Herbalism?
A Chinese herbal prescription is based on an individualized diagnosis determined by a pattern of body traits in addition to the symptoms of the disease being treated. For example, someone who feels hot all the time and has a cold will have a different herbal prescription from someone who has a cold and feels chilly.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) philosophy centers on treating a patient’s entire disease pattern in order to keep the body in balance and prevent ailments from occurring.
Western herbs are often tailored to treat a particular symptom. Chinese herbalism emphasizes treatment according to an individualized diagnosis determined by a pattern of body traits. While the herbal medicine may treat the symptom, it is also concerned with putting the body back in balance.
Each formula is made or prescribed for an individual’s disease pattern as well as for the symptoms.
